How to keep purity and save money – transformer oil storage tanks

Transformer oil is a product of oil refining. The properties of the oil are a direct function of the origin of oil. Various transformer oil production processes through deep refining of oil allow production of various types of fuels and oils.

There are several characteristics of transformer oil. The changes of these show quality, type and properties of the oil. Oil density varies from 0.84-0.89 kg per liter. Other properties of the oil are flammability, biodegradability and no impact on the ozone layer. Another important parameter is viscosity. Viscosity of transformer oil should be low for better cooling.

Dielectric quality of the oil is indicated by dielectric loss tangent, also referred to as dissipation factor. This is the ability of the dielectric liquid to dissipate energy in the insulator in electric field.

Oil is a component of the transformer’s insulation and cooling system. The dielectric strength of the oil depends on the presence of contaminants, such as water and particles, in the oil. One of the most important parameters of transformer oils is oxidation stability, i.e. the ability to remain within specs for long periods of time.

One of the most important requirements to transformer oil, especially new oil just before it is put into a transformer, is its purity. Presence of water, gases and solid particles accelerates aging of oil and disrupts the insulation of the transformer. The requirements to the purity of oil have increased with the emergence of new technologies which help to use resources in a more efficient manner. The condition of the transformer’s insulation system is and essential factor defining its service life, since oil accumulates contaminants that can cause sediment and damage insulation paper and windings.

Additives are frequently added to the oil to hold off the aging process.

Service life of transformer oil is often dependant on the use of compatible materials. They do not accelerate aging of the oil and contain no harmful contaminants. The minimal time of oil use without replacement or purification for regular transformer oil is 3 – 5 years. However, service life of oil can be extended to 20 – 25 years.

Before filling the electric euqipmetn with transformer oil, the oil is usually processed to remove various undesirable materials accumulated in storage and during transportation. Storage conditions are important for any oil handling facility. Oil purification and regeneration systems return the oil to the original quality, but only if the contamination results from aging or reaction with water or air.

Incorrect storage and handling of transformer oil can pose a fire hazard as well.

Transformer oil from oil refineries is stored in tanks and vessels equipped with pumps, oil processing equipment, oil supply pipelines, as well as firefighting equipment as per national and local regulations. The quality of the oil is carefully controlled and examined in laboratories.

Failure to observe the regulations leads not only to violations but also to emergencies and loss of product.

For example, storing of oil at heated stations which are equipped with heating units, connected to heating grid.

To the question if this can be done the answer is that there seems to be no direct prohibitions on this, so technically it can.

In reality, servicing of equipment for which transformer oil is used, as per the standards, is only possible with well organized centralized oil facility, as mentioned above. Besides, oil storage tanks are important, the number of tanks is depends on the volume of transformers installed. Separate storage of new and used oils of various types should also be considered, as well as availability of at least one free tank for preparation of transformer oil for filling into the equipment.

GlobeCore has been in the industrial manufacturing for many years, and the company focuses on development and production of high quality equipment.

Liquid storage tanks made by GlobeCore are cylindrical insulated vessels of made of construction steel. The design allows to maintain oil temperature without overheating or freezing. These tanks also feature control and management systems.

Due to the high production standards, GlobeCore’s liquid storage tanks  allow to maintain the optimal quality of the product, prevent premature aging or contamination of the material, and comply with all regulations and norms in various countries.
